About

Patrick McKelvey is a second year doctoral student in Theatre and Performance Studies at Brown University. His research examines performance and biopolitics, particularly the relationship between disability and theatricality under neoliberalism. In this project, he studies an eclectic archive of theatrical, cultural, and political performances, from American Sign Language adaptations of Broadway musicals to HIV/AIDS-fetish "bugchasing" cultural productions, state-sponsored human rights documentaries to beauty pageants for disabled women.  His academic interests also include queer performance, spectatorship, and theories of affect and temporality. Recently, he presented his work at ATHE in Chicago: as a participant on the LGBT Focus Group Pre-Conference Roundtable, "Witnessing Progress, Queerly," and on a panel entitled "A Queerer Time: Temporality and the American Musical," which he also chaired.

Prior to arriving at Brown, Patrick spent a year as Literary Intern at McCarter Theatre, where he worked as an assistant dramaturg for directors such as Emily Mann, Liesl Tommy, Tina Landau, and Robert O'Hara. Additionally, he has worked as a freelance dramaturg and script reader in New York, where he collaborated with companies including Aporia Theatre, Sundance Theatre Lab, Ensemble Studio Theatre, and Repertorio Español. Patrick holds dual B.A.s in English and Theatre (Performance as Public Practice) from The University of Texas at Austin
