About
The broader objective of my research is to define Italy’s thinking about war and political responsibility, and the failure to process its Fascist past.Towards this end, I have identified the role played by the figure of Saint Francis of Assisi: proclaimed by Pius XII patron saint of the nation in 1939 with the formula, already appreciated by Fascists, “the most Italian of saints, the most saintly of Italians,” Francis actually embodies Italy’s refusal of analysis and interpretation in favor of theatricality and emphasis on vision. Also due to the of the appropriation of his figure on the part of Fascism, this saint has functioned as Trojan Horse through which war and violence could be both repressed and integrated in Italian public discourse.
